A little bit about the process…

We were told to create a set of hypothetical postage stamps for Canada Post under a theme of our choice. I decided that my theme would be inspired by cocktails but rather than simply illustrating various cocktails, I would draw characters inspired by the cocktails themselves. For the purposes of showing the stamps in a larger format and context, the designs displayed in the images above have been slightly modified to fit the context of a poster and home decoration rather than a postage stamp.

The Martini character’s dress was inspire by the silhouette of a classic Martini glass and her hair being put in a bun and held together by a pin is meant to resemble the olives that are used as garnishes for the cocktail.

The Bellini (A mix of prosecco and peach juice) character’s dress matches the silhouette of a champagne flute and the gems on the dress act as the bubbles that are associated with the sparkling beverage. Also, the dress’s train as well as the character’s hair were drawn to look like the drink is foaming over.

For the Gimlet character, it was inspired specifically by the French Gimlet and plays on the idea of a coupe glass as well as the twist of lime that is often used as a garnish for this cocktail.

Finally, for the Bloody Caesar’s outfit calls attention to the drink’s vibrant red colour while also paying homage to iconic bartender uniform (notably from around 1920s). Additionally, the character’s hair was made to look like the celery stalk often added to the drink.
